History

We started to get together in the mid 70’s when the first microcomputer, the MITS Altair 8800, came out. The South Florida Computer Group members were mostly computer hardware engineers and amateur radio operators.

Several of us built our own systems based on boards produced by the Digital Group. These had 8080 CPUs and about 10K of ram, with an audio cassette for program storage. Later they were upgraded to Z-80 CPUs and we used 8 inch diskette drives.

When the Radio Shack TRS-80 and the Apple ][ came out, the club was flooded with people with no engineering or programming background. A core group of us split off and started the First Monday Computer Group. We started meeting in homes and later in restaurants around the area. We have been meeting monthly since the late 70s.
